Love, companionship, and sloppy kisses are just a few of the reasons people own pets. According to the American Humane Society, whopping 62% of American households own pets of all shapes, sizes, colors, and breeds. But is there more to being a pet owner than teaching Fido to sit? Adopting can be less costly and animals are there to provide comfort and fun. Fido will gain a feeling of love with his new family and open up space and time for other animals in a shelter.
Pets have been proven to be good for your health in many ways.
Studies have shown that people with pets have lower heart rates and blood pressure. Pet lovers also recover quicker from stress and have less of it. A National Institutes of Health study showed that heart attack sufferers who owned dogs had a better one-year survival after the attack that those who were without pets. Lower cholesterol, better mobility, and staying fit are a few more benefits.
We have always found the value in finding companionship with a pet. We also know the value in adopting a rescued pet and giving them a new lease on life. In the United States, almost 7 million pets enter an animal shelter every year. Of these, 4 million are euthanized. About 20% are cats and almost 60% are dogs. 164 million pets are owned in the U.S. and only 20% of these were adopted. And guess what? 50% were free. Our mission is to inform more people about not only the benefits of rescuing a dog or cat, but to provide people with the means to be able to do so successfully.
